‘It’s Working!’: Video Shows Deer, Bears, And More Using Utah’s First Wildlife Overpass
November 25, 2020
Utah’s first wildlife overpass is working as intended.
The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources has shared a video to social media of various animals — including deer, bears and bobcats — using the overpass to cross Interstate 80.
“It’s working!” the department captioned the video.
The overpass, which is 48 feet wide and 330 feet long, opened in December 2018.
The bridge’s construction came after 46 deer, 14 moose, and four elk were killed on that stretch of highway in 2016 and 2017 alone.
“From what we can tell, the number of accidents there is down dramatically,” UDOT spokesman John Gleason said. “At least initially, it appears the investment in safety is paying off. And we expected it to take several years before the animals got used to using it, so this is great.”
